All about Cholla <choy-ya>
Glowing in the morning sunlight and covered with dense spines the cuddly looking Teddy Bear and Jumping Cholla are the meanest, nastiest plants in the entire desert. Pieces of the cholla, called heads, break off at the slightest touch of fur, feather, fabric or skin and lodge unbelievably sharp spines in your arms, hands, legs and buns. Once in contact with your skin very fine barbs on the spines swell up from the moisture in your body drawing the needles in then anchoring them as much as half an inch deep in about 20 minutes. Removing cholla spines is as painful as contacting them and should be done right away.
